It’s been since 2006 that I’m playing this game in its various incarnations on the PSP. A bit bored with GTA LC I was browsing the shelves of my game store back then and the gameplay graphics on the back of the game catched my attention.

Almost 2 and 1/2 years later I’m here. With this site, my addiction and a lot of time dedicated to this.

How come? What has happened 2 years ago? What hellspawn persuaded me to start off a fanpage? Or to participate in one of the most wretched communities of all of them?

Well, as I said I took the game of the shelves on around June 2006. I had my PSP for about 3 months, almost solely playing GTA. I was looking for a game with some depth and the potential to last more than 20 hours. I had about 110 in GTA and so far I hadn’t found anything comparable.

So I inserted the UMD in my old black fat PSP, of course with original firmware as I knew nothing about customizing and frankly, I didn’t care. And once I started my first quests in Kokoto and cleared some of them I was instantly addicted.  I guess I have stated often enough why I like this game but in the beginning it was different. I liked the difficulty, the intensive gameplay and the little details the designer put into the experience. But then I hit Rathalos.

And he was my bane. I couldn’t for the life of me beat him. I failed, failed again and continued failing. And then I sold Monster Hunter Freedom on ebay in a fit of rage. I just couldn’t stand it that a game was able to defeat me over and over again.

Then some time passed and in October 2006 I bought the UMD again. I don’t know what was riding me, I guess I was bored with the shitty PSP collection again. And, again, I hit the bump called Rathalos.

And then in October I started browsing the web for information and I found: gameFAQs. I knew of this site beforehand but used it only for browsing for unlockables in GTA. I entered the board, asked my first dumb question (it was along this line: How to beat Rathalos with SnS?) and then I was hooked.

I soaked information, gathered data and read all and everything I could find about MH. Around January 2007 I was thinking about weapon trees which didn’t exist back then. The only ones in English were those of MH PS2. And then I made my first three trees on my own. They were really crappy compared to those available now but I published them on http://www.reign-of-the-rathalos.com, a site I registered solely for the weapon trees.

I believe I had the first real fan-based webpage about MHF online. It became clear very fast that my trees and my page design were crap to begin with and in around March I restarted the site as a blog about MH. That first entry is still on here, don’t laugh. And in April 2007 the weapon calculator went online for the first time and initiated the success my little page had. The rest made history.

I had various contributors in the last two years, Azrael and Suzaku being the only ones still alive. But you may remember Snuffkin, or even MinorVaginor on his shortlived access to the blog. Browse the blog archive to learn about them (I just found out that most author tags are wrong after the several updates I made, I will correct those…).

The semifinalists are:

Naruga Kuruga
The night cougar, fast and deadly. Introduced in MHP2G he only kills hunter on the PSP. Of all the monsters in the finals he is the newcomer. But don’t expect him to be a cakewalk.

Kushala Daora
The Elder Dragon of the Wind, first seen in MH2 on the PS2. A very intimidating presence, blowing beast and human away.

Rajang
If a monster goes Super Saiyan in MH, it’s Rajang. And he has a even more angry successor in MHP2G, let’s call it Super Saiyan 2. Noted first in MH2 on the PS2.

Lao Shan Lung
Old Mountain Dragon. A fitting name for the great slug. While huge and loud and all that the only danger he poses on hunters is the death by falling asleep. He’s in from MH for the PS2.

So make your first choice on the semifinals #1, where Naruga enters the Arena against Rajang.
