Fresh’s Cheesy Tactic of the Week: Ledging
Well, let’s concentrate on one of the most cheesy tactics ever devised in Monster Hunter. There may be some even more cheesier but this one will really got you hated.
What defines the tactic?
Ledges are those small steps in some areas which you can climb, for example the one in the Great Arena. When you are ledging the monster you stay on the ledge and fire/attack the monster from this superior position. Sun-Tzu would have liked it. It is mostly referred to gunning and bowing but you can also fight with melee weapons.
Where can I use it?
Tigrex, ‘Blos, Plesioth. All critters who don’t fly and don’t have an upwards attack. Tigrex is surely more difficult as his snowball push gears upward and will hit you on the ledge, but with some trajectory skills you can avoid getting hit.
Blos was one of the easiest monster to ledge in MHF where you just had to stand on the Desert area ledge and pierce him down.
In MHFU he has gained an earthquake attack when ramming the ledge so the tactic is less broken but still feasible.
How do I use it?
Well, easy as cheese. Climb the ledge, draw you gun, aim, fire away. Or Unsheath-Charge the stuck Monoblos. Or whatever may hit the monster from that upper position. Don’t get hit as you may be thrown off the ledge and then it gets ugly.
Avoid the Vespoids/Thunderbugs almost ALWAYS present on ledging areas. If they are not there, Genprey are.
What are the pros?
They can’t hit you and you hit them. This follows the great rule #1: Hit it til it dies and don’t get hit. It’s easy and you can do it on autopilot on, say, Plesioth.
What are the cons?
Not that many suitable ledge areas are in the game anymore and almost all monsters have a bailout option now, see Blos. I found it no longer worthwhile climbing even the most broken ledge (Old Desert) and giving Four Horns a beating.
Why is it cheesy?
Must I explain? It’s like hiding in a hole (we will talk about that in a later issue) and shooting out. It’s not abusing a glitch but don’t get caught online trying to climb a ledge with a gun.
Conclusion
Ledging isn’t the thing anymore it used to be in MHF and MHF2 but still you may have to resort to ledging to kill a particular difficult monster (for you) the first time. But don’t rely on it as all monsters appear on at least two maps and one of those maps will have no ledge for you.

yep, that’s how most gunners do the trick.
Not very skillful though, but that’s why it’s a Cheesy Tactic I guess…
Nice one, Fresh!
These articles are great.
hey, thats how i killed my first monoblos in MHF.
In Soviet Russia, Plesioth ledges you!
Well, as long as you are a blademaster and out of sonic bombs. But he certainly can attack you from an unreachable place. (hydrophobic hunters before Tri?)
I remember losing one of my first fights against him because I ran out of time and the bastard wouldn’t come out of the water. I didn’t bring sonic bombs and didn’t know where to get frogs from in the desert (MHF2). Since I’ve discovered that bowing it is so much easier I rarely bother as a blademaster. Plus breaking the fin is also easier.
Aaah…
Running in terror as a fatalis chased you…
Climbing a ladder…
Saying “Gotcha now, motherfucker!”…
Drawing your GV…
(Before Capcom raped it.)
Just devastatingly raping it’s face for 35 GLORIOUS minutes…
Felt good!
Maybe even more fun than NOT ledging it, amirite?
Also: epic lulz @xEik
XD
this was how i beat my urgent tigrex missions. Sit on the ledge with my 50+ clust lvl2 shots and my auto fire gun but after i decided to beat him with every weapon in the training grounds i learned easier ways with the SnS.
This is a really easy and quick way to the bulldrime as well the problem for me though is that I can’t seem to kill the White monoblos and struggle to kill the elder dragons… I’m probably more informally known as a noob!!! xD
I use ledging only for breaking diablos’ horn, because it kept swinging it like an asshole. Once I break it, then it’s back to attacking the tail.
I’ve never known ledging to be THAT broken. Diablos/Monoblos have the tailwhip (although, I admit it works well for horn-breaking… but then, so do Flash Bombs), Plesioth is predictable enough for the ledge to be more of a hindurance than an asset, and I’ve never tried it on Tigrex. I would assume that if you could get him close enough, his upward snow/sand attack would hit the wall, but I don’t know if his spin attack would hit you.
Does the akantor thing count as ledging?
I think that’s an article of it’s own..
But I could never get it to work.
Really? You sure you were jumping at the right time in the right place? Ah well it doesn’t matter it’s just for fun I don’t find it helps much, just like the FnH glitch to get on the mountain in area 6.
I believe I may have found another spot where you can ledge. In the Kushala Daora quest when he’s in the jungle at area 3 you can walk up on that ledge and I guess you could bowgun or something. It wouldn’t be very fast but you could probably beat it. The only thing that I’ve found to actually hit me was the attack where he flies up and blows a continuous beam of wind and when that happens you can just block or roll into the other area. (This strategy combines zoning and ledging hooray for cheating!) somebody should try it out just to make sure it works. Unless everyone has already found this an tried it.
