MHFU Weapon Calc

PSP Go and your Thumb

Well, it’s kinda old news already, but Sony officially debuted the PSP Go on the E3, scheduled for an autumn release and going for $249. It is not intended to be a replacement for the PSP 3000, merely another PSP for those who dislike the larger 3000 design.

Well, here’s the picture:

As you can see the analogue and the directional buttons are placed on the bottom in a sideway line. Since many MHF players use The Claw to play (meaning you place your index finger of the left hand on the directionals instead of the shoulder button and adjust your camera without leaving the analogue) this arrangement will make it practically impossible to play with that style.
I, as one of many, use the shoulder button to center the camera and haven’t had a problem with that in my 1200+ playing hours.

However, the rage in the MHF community is loud and harsh. What do you think? Is this thing usable for effective Monster Hunting?

  • No. The Claw must be used. (78%, 311 Votes)
  • Yes. A tap of the shoulder button is enough. (22%, 89 Votes)

  • What? The Claw? That sounds awkward and uncomfortable! I’ve never even considered playing in that style.

Of course, the Go looks awkward and uncomfortable never the less.

  • Vuze:

I am using the claw since i am playing MH. PSP GO = Phail.

  • pretty ugly the new psp. I think it wont sell good. Lets just all w8 for the MH 3 for the Xbox 360 :)

  • ummmmmm……….. yeah, well, this psp uses a new type of digatal media (meaning you download all the games) so unless you can download mh on this psp, it doesnt really matter, you can have a normal psp for umds and apsp go for downloadables.thats what im doing. and if the psp go isnt as epexted ill just trade in :) . Also athanatoz, sorry to tell you this, but mh3 is only coming out for wii.

  • Vuze:

There will be a monster hunter portable 3rd.

  • i know, itll be able to conect to tge wii one, because i think its going to be a sub-port to mh 3 for the wii

  • Methias:

my buddies that use the claw slowly developed hand problems in our 2000+ hours of monster hunting. centering4lyf

  • Dave:

I use my right hand for the camera. ‘Course i can’t attack when i do that. But if im attacking the shoulder is fine. Hmmm, can’t sprint, but it’s never bothered me.

  • Trexxen:

Is there an option for “No, but I don’t use the Claw either”? I’ve got large fingers, so I’m perfectly fine using my thumb for the analog and the d-pad at the same time. I would hate to use ANY game on that monstrosity though – dpad next to the analog…what were they thinking?

  • I’ve never needed to use the claw. I find i have enough time to take my thumb off the analog stick to jab the dpad. Leaves my index finger free to tap the L button and keep my view.

But that’s one hell of a crappy design, the analog stick shouldn’t be next to the dpad and it’s also too close to the main pad. Doesn’t look comfortable to use – you’ll be straining like made to hit the L button without taking your thumb off the analog!

I bet the sliding mechanism wears out, it’s not as robust a design as the old models, i’d end up busting it with my hands of doom :(

  • Ak-Fren:

It’s funny, the poll indicates that most people use the claw but most of the comments say they use the L button.

I, personally, use the claw. Being able to pan the camera while moving may not be necessary to play, but I’ve gotten far too used in my 1000+ hours to it to give it up now. It allows me to make my own sort of improvised “lock-on”, always panning to follow the monster.

The PSP Go is a great idea, but then so is world peace. I really can’t imagine using that layout for more complex games. For games like Loco Roco and Patapon it should work fine. Good idea, not exactly practical.

  • Athanatoz:

mh fan , i heard that it will also come out for the xbox 360.
Ill check again for u to be sure.

  • Spanks:

Using the claw takes a bit more mindpower.
    A mild lock-on.
I don’t care how many hours you have, everyone has over 1000, solely using the L button makes you too slow. (im impatient, and I use both lol)

  • if mh 3 does come out for the 360, itll be one of the best tittles for it, probably better controls too, yet i only have a wii, so i plan to buy a classic wii controler.

ps: sorry for any misguidance athanatoz. lol

  • Massaki:

    > mh fan , i heard that it will also come out for the xbox 360.

I really don’t know where you’re getting your information, but that’s completely 100% fake. Probably never going to happen. But, hey, with Microsoft, you never know. Maybe if they shower Capcom with 50 million. But even then, it probably wouldn’t be enough.

As for the topic, I use both, depending on the situation.

  • (^-_-^):

man I never knew that many people were using the “claw” too.

  • Ddyq:

The problem with using the L button is you have to turn your character the direction you want to see first, which makes it very difficult to dodge attacks while keeping your eyes on the monster. I don’t use the claw in the sense that my finger is always on the dpad, but I move it there to spin the camera when needed. What we really need is a right analog stick.

  • The PSP Go looks really uncomfortable. I could see many people complaining that their hand is cramping up after playing MH or some other game for a while.
