7 = 12 – 5
You will read this, ok? Translated interview with Tsuijimoto (MH producer)
In what may be a tough new move for some series fans to swallow, the number of weapon categories in MH3 have gone down from 12 to only seven — Great Swords, Lances, Hammers, Bowguns, Sword/Shield, Katanas, and the new Slash Axes. “After a great deal of debate, we concluded that we needed to whittle down the weapon categories and concentrate on adding more depth to each individual weapon, Tsujimoto explained.
What the hell is a slash axe?
An axe which is able to slash. That’s my best guess.
If you read the article it says what a slash ax is. I’d guess it’s to answer all those that whined about their hammers not being able to cut tails.
Also, while I’ll miss the longswords this is probably a good idea. Can you imagine having to animate/program moves for 12 weapon types on land AND in the water?
Hopefully they will branch out again once they know that these five play well.
Sorry I meant seven at the end.
Wow, now I’m one not reading the article. I should have said I’d miss gunlances, since longswords are still in….
Well, again, after playing the demo, I figured as much. I also wonder if they removed a lot of the wyverns and such. I have yet to see a different prey except for the new one, so I wonder if they removed velociprey et al.
As for the weapons, I’ve only tried SnS and Great Sword, both work great. SnS new “jumb slash” has a lot more distance added to it.
I can get on board with Slash Axes, I just hope they bring back the others once these 7 are down, as Ak-Fren said.
That should be “jump” slash.
if they are going back to 7 weapons, they should have gone with the MH1 weapon types. GS, SnS, DS, Hm, Ln, LBg, HBg. what makes them want to take out DSs but keep LSs in and such.
plus, they got rid of the bow. it is a sad day. it almost makes me not want the game as soon as its out. Then I realize that hunting horns are gone too. my two weapons of choice in MHF2 are gone.
It is a little sad that they removed some weapon classes, but I think in this case that the old saying,”Quality over quantity,” is especially true.
….first off their are only 10 classes in the old ones not 12. second WHY TAKE OUT DUAL BLADES OF ALL THINGS they were easy to control, good for beginners, and easy upgrading. i use only dual blades ever time i start to play i have used every other weapon and i suck with them all except for dual blades seriously i have used a saved file on gamefaqs and got the best of every wep and i could not kill even a kut ku with any!!!!! i am probably not even gonna get this game now cuz ill only suck all the time
SnS, DS, GS, LS, Hammer, HH, Lance, GL, Bow, LBG, HBG – I’m counting eleven. But who am I to discredit Tsujimoto.
Were there rumors of the slash axes before this?
Maybe that’s how they got 12.
it should be 7 = 11 + 1 – 5
As much as I like them, I do feel its very odd that they decided to keep Katanas/LS and ditch duals.
I wonder if they’ll add the feature from Frontier that lets you adjust the length of the SnS blade?
what are the 5 weapons? I can only count 4 – HH, DS, GL, Bow – which am I missing?
He only mentioned bowgun once, so LBG/HBG may be considered as one weapon.
But: IN the MH3 demo there are the little icons of the weapons and they have been ripped already:

If you look at the red marked weapons there are 9 different weapons:
SnS, GS, LS, Lance, Hammer, LBG, a new BG, HBG, Slash Axe
you can never have enough gunners
Hey guys, I have to say, I played the demo a bit more last night, and yeah, I can see the argument by Capcom. They’ve added new move sets to every weapon. For instance, SnS now has a low level slash that you can follow up with a overhead slash, perfect for getting right in at bellies and slicing into them.
You can now use your shield as a ‘basher’ too. You punch with the shield then do a shielded bash with it, its pretty awesome. Its sucks that duals are out, but I think they did a good job putting more depth into the weapons left in.
The only sadness I feel after hearing that is that they will never be able to put that much depth into the PSP games because of the controls.
I think we now know why MHFU took so long to get here, they were putting all their effort into Tri.
Good riddance. If I’d needed to master 12 weapons I’d have some problems
well…i’ll somewhat miss bows , i really liked them more then guns, and i somewhat enjoyed the gunlances too.
Guess i’ll just have to stick with the rest, the only weapon i never really used outside of the training school were dual blade and hunting horn.
Still it’s a shame for the fan of these, i hope the game’ll be awesome anyway, probably will.
I am a Gunner. And as a gunner, I am totally stoked for Medium Bowguns. I hope they pull it off well. A happy medium between the shot variety of a Light Bowgun and the Raw power of a heavy bowgun could be nice.
I also heard something about the Bowguns having more customization, but that may have just been a rumor.
Also stoked for Shieldbashing. I might get back into SnS.
